Prisma Admin

Overview

Overview

Prisma Admin can be used to:

  • Query and visually interact with your data
  • Modify your data and add new data to your database
  • Render your data with custom UI components

You can read the announcement blog post for Prisma Admin here.

Accessing Prisma Admin

Prisma Admin is accessible at the /_admin endpoint of your Prisma service: https://__PRISMA_SERVER__/__SERVICE_NAME/__SERVICE_STAGE__/_admin

For example:

  • http://localhost:4466/_admin

You can find the endpoint of your Prisma service in your prisma.yml.

You can also open prisma admin for a specific Prisma project with the prisma admin command

Areas

The Prisma Admin interface is composed of 4 main areas:

  • Left: The Sidebar
  • Center: The Query area & Result area
  • Right: The Detail area

The Sidebar on the left side lists all your queries and mutations. By default, there is one query for each model of your Prisma datamodel that retrieves all the database records of that model with all scalar fields and the id fields of related models.

Query area

The Query area lets you write GraphQL to read and write data in your database. The of your queries/mutations will show up in the Result area.

Result area

The Result area displays the query/mutation results from the Query area. Results can be filtered, sorted and paginated by adding respective parameters to the GraphQL query in the Query area. You can also control which columns should be part of the result table by modifying the selection set of the query/mutation.

Detail area

The Detail area on within the right hand side gives you a more in-depth view of your data by displaying the details for a selected database record. You can view each record as:

  • A Form component: This is default view for the Detail area. Similar to the functionality of the Result area, you can edit any of the data and save it by confirming your changes.
  • A JSON component: See your results as JSON by clicking on the eye icon at the top right of the Detail area
  • A custom UI component (experimental)

Writing data

Prisma Admin lets you easily create, update and delete data in your database through its GUI. You can make changes to the data in the Result and Detail areas of the Admin interface.

Every database write is a two-step-process:

  1. Make local changes in the Prisma Admin UI (your local change will be highlighted afterwards)
  2. Once you're done with all changes, you need to submit them to the database. You can do so by clicking the Save to Database button in the buttom-right corner.

Creating data

New database records can be created in the Result area. Clicking on the little + button beside the three dots creates a new (unconfirmed) change in the database. To save the change and actually create the new database entry, you need to click the Save to Database button in the buttom-right corner.

You need to fill in all of the required fields in order to successfully save the information. If you added multiple records, you should double check that all of the required fields are filled in, not just those on the entry that you are currently editing.

Updating data

Editing data can similarly be done in two ways: in the Result area or in the Detail are. The same two steps that apply to adding data are relevant for editing data. Once again, you need to just edit the data and save the changes afterwards by clicking the Save to Database button in the buttom-right corner.

Deleting data

To delete a database record, you need to open its Details area. You can then click the three dots in the top-right corner and select Delete record. Similar to creating and updating data, you need to confirm your changes by clicking the Save to Database button in the buttom-right corner.
